How it works

One-to-one lessons with a tutor you choose, from home.

Find a qualified tutor, ask them anything, book a time that suits you, and learn live on video with a shared whiteboard. Here's everything you need to know.

For families

From search to your first lesson

  1. 1

    Find a tutor

Search by subject and level. Profiles show qualifications, experience, the languages they teach in, reviews from other families, and their hourly rate.
  2. 2

    Ask questions (free)

Message a tutor before you book: what you'd like to work on, exam dates, or anything your child finds tricky.
  3. 3

    Request a time

Choose a 30, 45 or 60-minute lesson from the tutor's calendar, at least 24 hours ahead, once or every week. Pay securely when you send the request.
  4. 4

    The tutor confirms

They have 24 hours to accept. If they don't, you're refunded in full automatically. Once accepted, the lesson is on your dashboard.

Parents

Create one account and add each of your children. You book and pay for their lessons, message their tutors, and can join any lesson yourself. Tell tutors about any additional needs, privately, when you add your child.

Students aged 16 and over

Sign up as a student to book and manage your own lessons, from exam preparation to English for work or study.

Lessons

Inside the lesson room

Everything happens in your browser. There's nothing to download.

  • Video call with your tutor. Parents can join their child's lesson too.
  • Shared whiteboard next to the video: write, draw, add shapes and text, and see each other's pointer as you work.
  • Opens 10 minutes early, so you can check your camera and sound, and stays open 15 minutes after.
  • Recorded, so you can watch the lesson again for 30 days. The whiteboard is saved too.

Works best on a laptop or tablet in a quiet room, with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.

Prices

Clear prices, paid securely

No subscription and no sign-up fee. You only pay for lessons, at the price you see before you book.

Pay per lesson

Tutors set their own hourly rate. A 30 or 45-minute lesson costs that share of the hourly rate. The price is fixed when you send your request.

Lesson packs: save 5%

5 or 10 lessons with one tutor. Credits last 6 months; refund unused credits at any time, and anything left after 6 months is refunded automatically.

Weekly lessons

Book the same day and time for 2 to 12 weeks in one go, paid with pack credits or in one payment. Each lesson can still be cancelled on its own.

In the UK you pay in pounds through Stripe; in Nigeria, in naira through Paystack. AfriTutor never sees or stores your card details. Never pay a tutor directly.

Cancellations and refunds

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

Refunds go back to the card or account you paid with, automatically. Banks can take 5 to 10 days to show them.

Safety

Keeping lessons safe

Many of our learners are children. These rules apply to every tutor and every lesson.

  • Every tutor is checked by our team before they can teach: identity, qualifications, and an Enhanced DBS check (UK) or police clearance (Nigeria).
  • Profiles are reviewed, including any later changes, before families see them.
  • Contact stays on AfriTutor. Phone numbers, emails, links and social media handles are blocked in messages, profiles and reviews.
  • Every lesson is recorded, and only the lesson's tutor and family can enter the room.
  • Report anything that worries you: every message has a Report button, and our team reviews reports and can suspend accounts.
  • Payments are protected. Families pay AfriTutor, not the tutor, so refunds always follow the rules above.

For tutors

Teaching with AfriTutor

We welcome qualified tutors everywhere, and especially want to hear from talented teachers across Africa.

  1. 1

    Apply

Sign up as a tutor and build your profile: photo, introduction, subjects and levels, qualifications and your hourly rate.
  2. 2

    Get checked

Upload your ID and background check (Enhanced DBS in the UK, police clearance in Nigeria). Our team reviews your application.
  3. 3

    Set your hours

Choose the weekly times families can book. You accept or decline each request within 24 hours.
  4. 4

    Teach and get paid

Teach in the lesson room. You keep 80% of each lesson, paid automatically after it's done.

How you're paid

In the UK, your share goes to your Stripe account 24 hours after each lesson, and Stripe pays it into your bank. In Nigeria, we send one bank transfer a week through Paystack for all your finished lessons. AfriTutor's 20% covers payments, the lesson room, recordings and support.

Cancellations, for tutors

If a family cancels less than 24 hours before, you're still paid. If you cancel, the family is refunded in full, so please only cancel if you really have to. With packs, you still earn your full 80% of your normal rate.

FAQs

Questions families ask

Who can use AfriTutor?
Families in the UK and in Nigeria. Parents create an account and add their children, so children don't need their own login. Students aged 16 or over can sign up themselves. You'll see tutors, prices and lesson times for your own country.
How much does it cost?
There's no subscription or sign-up fee. Each tutor sets their own hourly rate, which is shown on their profile, and you pay per lesson (or buy a pack of 5 or 10 lessons to save 5%). Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes and the price is worked out from the hourly rate.
When do I pay?
When you send a lesson request. The tutor only sees your request once it's paid, and has 24 hours to accept. If they decline or don't answer, you're refunded in full automatically. UK families pay in pounds through Stripe; Nigerian families pay in naira through Paystack. AfriTutor never sees your card details.
Can I talk to a tutor before booking?
Yes. Use “Message” on a tutor's profile to ask about their experience, how they'd help, or times that suit you. Messaging is free. For everyone's safety, phone numbers, emails and links can't be shared, and all contact stays on AfriTutor.
What do I need for a lesson?
A laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. There's nothing to install. A phone works too, though a bigger screen is easier for the whiteboard.
How do I join a lesson?
A “Join lesson” button appears on your dashboard 10 minutes before the start. You'll see yourself first, so you can check your camera and sound, then you're in. The room stays open until 15 minutes after the lesson ends.
Why are lessons recorded, and who can see the recording?
Recording keeps everyone safe and means you can watch a lesson again. The family and the tutor can watch it for 30 days. AfriTutor keeps recordings for 90 days in case anything needs checking, then deletes them. Everyone is told a lesson is recorded before they join.
Can I book the same time every week?
Yes. When you book, choose “Every week” for 2 to 12 weeks. The tutor accepts or declines the whole series at once, and you can still cancel any single lesson up to 24 hours before for free.
How do lesson packs work?
Buy 5 or 10 lessons with one tutor, for one lesson length, and save 5%. Use a credit each time you book. Credits last 6 months. You can get unused credits refunded at any time, and anything left after 6 months is refunded automatically. If a lesson is declined, or cancelled 24 hours or more ahead, the credit goes back into your pack.
What if I'm not happy with a lesson?
Tell us at hello@afritutor.co.uk. We'll look at what happened, including the lesson recording, and can refund some or all of it. You can also leave a review to help other families.
How do reviews work?
After a lesson, families can give the tutor 1 to 5 stars and a written review. Reviews show your first name only. Tutors can reply once. Only families who have had a lesson with a tutor can review them, and reviews that break our rules are removed.
How are tutors checked?
Before a tutor can teach, our team checks their identity document, qualifications and background check: an Enhanced DBS certificate for UK tutors, or a police clearance certificate for Nigerian tutors. We also review their profile, and any later changes to it, before families can see it.
